2020 SEASONAL WATERING GUIDE

Practical guidelines for seasonal watering of lawns & turfgrass for 2020

"GENERALLY, ONE SHOULD  WATER TURFGRASS DEEPLY & INFREQUENTLY"
Responding to climate conditions and plant stress to determine exact watering needs, understanding that sprinklers are to be use as a supplementary source only.

SPRINKLERS SHOULD BE A SUPPLEMENTARY SOURCE ONLY FOR WATERING LAWNS. During periods of heavy rainfall, automatic sprinkler systems should be turned off (temporarily) or the program adjusted to water "around the weather/rain". WIND is a factor also and watering should be avoided during high winds of 20mph or higher.

Being diligent in monitoring the weather when choosing exactly when to water your lawn makes all the difference. Over-watering leads to weed problems and a shallow root system, while under-watering stresses the turfgrass and promotes an underdeveloped canopy. See our annual watering guide below to help water correctly throughout the year.

This model is based on "Rotor-Type" sprinklers 20 min = approx. ¼” of water. If you have "spray-heads" (sprinklers that do not rotate) then reduce these times by half. Optimal watering start times: 2am to 6am, concluding by 9 or 10am at the latest during the normal growing season.
___________________________________________________________________________

SPRING 70°~80° (March ~ May) 1/2" of water/wk, one water session/wk
(March & April delay start times until temperatures are above 40°)

Example: when no rain is present
All Turfgrasses: ~ 40min x 1/wk @ 6am = 1/2"/wk

EARLY SUMMER 85°~95° (June ~ July) 1" of water/wk divided into 2 or 3 watering sessions/wk.

Example: when no rain is present
Warm-season grasses (Bermuda/Zoysia): ~40min x 2/wk @ 5am = 1”/wk
Cool-season grasses (Fescue): ~25min x 3/wk @ 6am = 1”/wk (disease warning)

LATE SUMMER 95°~110° (July ~ Aug) 1½” of water/wk divided into multiple watering sessions/wk.

Example: when no rain is present
Warm-season grasses (Bermuda/Zoysia): ~40min x 3 @ 5am = 1½”/wk,
Cool-season grasses (Fescue): ~12min x 2/day Everyday @ 6am & 3pm = ~2”/wk

* FALL 70°~95° (Sept ~ Oct) 1” of water/wk divided into 2 watering sessions/wk.

Example: when no rain is present
All Turfgrasses: ~40min x 2/wk @ 5am = 1”/wk
* Fescue: (If Seeded)
                 12min x 2 ED @ 6am & 3pm = 2”/wk - 1st 10 days after seeding (~Sept 1st)
                 20min x 1/day @ 7am =  1¾”/wk - next 10 days
                 35min e/o day @7am = 1½”/wk - next 10 days
                 40min x 2/wk @ 7am = 1”/wk - throughout Oct until the end of the season

November – Sprinkler systems OFF before & during freezing conditions
